After inconsistent performances in the pre-season Florida Cup that included a big win over Tallahassee and a big loss against Gainsville, JAX RFC was tasked with securing a spot in the Florida Cup playoffs against FL D2 champs and South finalists, Orlando RFC. Jacksonville knew a lot was on the line against this strong Orlando side, and after a hard week of preparation the team was up for the challenge.
From the first whistle, both teams were playing very loose and sloppy, which resulted in a lot of knock-ons and scrums. Turnovers plagued the Jacksonville side as possession was often stifled by Orlando in the rucks. Jacksonville managed to put together some scoring drives throughout the half, but Orlando would fight right back and resulted in a close match going into halftime.
After the first half, Jacksonville knew they had to clean up the ruck area and retain possesion if they were going to come away with a victory. The game turned in Jacksonville’s favor as Jacksonville started to put together some nice drives which turned into points. Orlando continued to fight, but strong defense and a few long tries would be the difference that lead to a Jacksonville win.
“We’re still learning how to win with a lot of new players this year, but everything is slowly coming together” says JAX RFC captain Bubba Peterson. “It’s still early, but they way we are playing at the moment should put us in good position to take home some hardware in the Florida Cup”.
With the win, Jacksonville will compete with Boca Raton, Ft. Lauderdale and Sarasota for the Plate at the Florida Cup playoffs on November 7th & 8th.
Final score- Jacksonville (39) – Orlando (27)
