High School Rugby starting in JAX

There is a new HS boys rugby team based out of Jacksonville, FL that you should take a look at. They hosted Orlando in their first game ever playing rugby on January 21st. Unfortunately, they did not get the result they had hoped for, falling 17-0 to the more experienced squad.  But the boys rebounded this past Saturday, February 11th  beating Sebastian River HS 34-17. They have a rematch against Orlando this Saturday, February 18th and I predict they will win big again. Then they will be playing Tampa on March 4th. The team is full of some very talented kids from inner city low-income areas and most are learning the game on rugby on the fly. I expect them to get better every week as the season progresses.

Boca takes the victory from JAX at home

Jacksonville played top-ranked Boca Raton at home this past Saturday. A little remittences of last years clash as Florida’s only cold weekend was upon us again. Jacksonville was playing at a new location, Abbess Park, as it is more centrally located to are new sponsor social, Culhane’s Irish Pub. The game would come to a slow start for Jacksonville as Boca Raton’s offense seemed to start wearing on JAX early in the match, with Boca scoring 2 tries and a penalty kick in the first 20 mins of the game. Jacksonville would respond with 2 tries back to back from center David Washington to narrow the gap at halftime.

Boca would not let up and kept piling on the scoring in the second half. Jacksonville’s offense started running flat and sloppy which Boca exploited. Jacksonville would end on a high-note as flanker Danny Palmeri would get his first try of his career to end the game.

Final score: Boca (41) JAX (21)

Jacksonville gets the narrow victory over Okapi

Jacksonville traveled to Weston, FL to play new comers, Okapi Wanderers in the second matrix match of the 2016-2017 FRU Division II match up. On the hot January afternoon, Jacksonville traveled fairly light due to injury and personal matters, but were up for the challenge with Okapi having home soil. The game started in Jacksonville’s favor with 8-Man Taylor “Thor” Youngling taking a crash up the middle and scoring under the post. Okapi would come back with a try of their own through their shifty backline. It seemed to be the story throughout the match as a battle of the backs was among the top challenges of the game. Jacksonville would score a try by winger Sean Balaban to end the half down by a few points.

JAX would come back in the second half, putting up two fast tries from centre David Washington and Aaron Church. Conversions on both tries were good. With the final 10 mins remaining, Okapi would come back and score multiple tries through the backline and would go up back 4 points with minutes remaining. Off a line-out, Jacksonville would get a chance with Thor crashing up the middle, but knocked-on in the try zone. Scrum would go to Okapi, but Jacksonville would get the advantage from a scrum infraction and would get the final shot to win the game. Jacksonville wins the scrum and after a few crash balls, Prop Tristan Morhous would put it in with a minute remaining. Jacksonville would hold Okapi off and win the game 29-28. Next game will be against Boca Raton on January 28th at Abess Park in Jacksonville, FL.

JAX goes 1-1 at FRU Winterfest

Jacksonville traveled to Orlando, Florida to compete in the inaugural FRU Winterfest, an open tournament for all rugby clubs in Florida. Unfortunately not many of the D2 Mens clubs joined we Jacksonville competed in a round robin styled tournament against college clubs, UCF and UF.

First game was against UCF at 11am. UCF came out ready to go as they put up the first try within the first minutes of the game. JAX responded with a try of their own, but couldn’t stop UCF’s back line from scoring 2 more tries to go into half time. JAX also picked up a yellow card just 5 mins into the game which did not help our defensive stand. In the second half, JAX came out hard putting in multiple tries and closed the gap, but UCF would come back and score a few more tries to end the game. Final score 17-38 UCF.

Our second match against UF was at 2pm. Jacksonville was ready to get a win for the day as they started the game off with some commanding runs and big time tries. Every line-out, scrum and ruck was spot-on which helped Jacksonville run away with the game with a final score 40-0.

Overall it was a fun tournament, and no players got injured. Just what Jacksonville needed heading into the Matrix season. Game 2 of the Matrix season will be this weekend, January 21st down in Weston, FL against newcomers Okapi Wanderers Rugby. Kickoff TBA.

JAX signs with Culhane’s Irish Pub and Sweetwater Brewery

Jacksonville RFC would like to take this time to give our warm welcome to our newest sponsors, Culhane’s Irish Pub and Sweetwater Brewery. We have officially signed with both businesses for the through 2018. “This partnership would not have been possible without the support of our coach, admin members and supporters.” said VP Tristan Morhous. “Culhane’s has welcomed us with open arms as well as Sweetwater, which provided us with their ever-so-popular beer selection. We are proud to call both of these businesses partners and cannot wait for future events, viewing parties and over growth with both companies.” Jackonville will be holding all of their post-game socials, fundraisers and watch parties at Culhane’s while pouring cold Sweetwater. We cannot be more thrilled and excited for this partnership and look forward to what it has in store for JAX RFC. Next time you are beachside, be sure to head on over to Culhane’s Irish Pub and order a Sweetwater!
